#WICKEDREADS for Halloween

I don’t know about you guys, but Halloween is hands down my favorite holiday. Not only is it during fall – my favorite season – but it’s all about candy and costumes and creepy books. So get out your flashlights, candy corn, blanket, and get ready to pack your shelves with some wicked reads. (All titles linked to Goodreads, as always)

               

BLOOD AND SALT by Kim Liggett (come back later this week for my review!) – A commune, a freaking cornfield, murder, blood, a FREAKING CORNFIELD. *shudders* Why do scary things always come from the cornfield?

THE ACCIDENT SEASON by Moira Fowley-Doyle (come back later this week for my review!) – Not necessarily as scary as the others or what you would think of as horror, but this eerie, haunting story about things that lurk in your backyard, violent accidents, and taboo will still put you in the mood for Halloween and fall.

SLASHER GIRLS & MONSTER BOYS by various authors, curated by April Genevieve Tucholke (come back on Wednesday for my review!) – This collection of creepy, horrifying, strange stories by some of the best YA authors is seriously awesome. There were a few stories that literally had me looking over my shoulder and keeping the light on.

THE DEAD HOUSE by Dawn Kurtagich – You guys might have read my review of this one, but it’s perfect for fans of psychological horror, possession, and the strange things the mind can do.

               

THE WALKING DEAD, Volume 1: Days Gone Bye by Robert Kirkman – I’m sure I don’t really need to explain this one too much, but if you haven’t read these comics yet, what the heck are you waiting for?

CORALINE by Neil Gaiman – Kids trapped in mirrors, strange people with button eyes who kidnap Coraline and want her to sew buttons on for her own eyes. I mean, what more do you want?

THROUGH THE WOODS by Emily Carroll – You might’ve also read my review of this one, but this is a graphic novel made up of four seriously creeptastic stories with some chilling illustrations. ‘It came from the woods. Most strange things do.’

DOLL BONES by Holly Black – This one is a little different from the others in that it’s a MG novel, but like I said in my review, I think Doll Bones was just creepy enough, but not too much to scare young children into nightmares.

NIGHTFALL by Jake Halpern and Peter Kujawinski – A world in which the sun only rises every 28 years. YEARS. Just imagine how different the world would be if it was almost always night. You would definitely have reason to be afraid of the things that go bump in the night.

MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN by Ransom Riggs – my awesome Secret Sister just sent me this one and I cannot wait to read it! Just flipping through this one could creep you out – it’s full of some disturbing and strange photos.

SURVIVE THE NIGHT by Danielle Vega – An underground rave in NYC that turns deadly. Teens are being hunted in the creepy, dank tunnels of the NYC subway system. Sounds pretty thrilling and terrifying to me.

SHUTTER by Courtney Alameda – A ghost hunt that goes wrong and infects the hunters with something that will kill them unless they can exorcise their own entities. Add in the fact that the MC is a descendant of Van Helsing and you’ve got me hooked.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Comics for Readers who would LIKE to try them

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish. For today’s theme we had to choose a topic and give ten books for readers who liked that topic (Ten Books For Readers Who Like _________). I’ve decided to put a little spin on this and I’m going with:

Ten comics for readers who would like to try them

I know it’s kind of cheating, but as I did my freebie TTT post on Reasons to Read Comics, I thought I’d actually give you some comics to read! Please note that I have only been reading comics for approximately seven months, so my list is obviously not exhaustive nor am I say I’m an expert comic reader. If you have more suggestions, please feel free to leave them in the comments! I’m always looking for more to read. I’m going to link to some of my reviews, but I kind of cringe at them now – my comics reviews have improved as my reading and understanding of them have grown. These are in the order in which I first read them:

Saga – When I first told my branch manager at the library (who is a HUGE comics reader) that I wanted to try comics, he shoved the first trade of Saga at me. The very first line was “Am I shitting?” and I cracked up. Saga is a huge, sweeping fantasy about a war between a planet and its moon and the consequences of two people falling in love when they shouldn’t. But it’s also offensive, hilarious, weird, and super awesome. I know have Saga on my pull list at my comic book shop. [volume 1] I [volume 2] I [volume 3]

The Walking Dead – I love TWD so much that it had its own reason on that TTT post I linked to above. I devoured all 20 (at that time) trades – including buying several that were not in my library’s system because some jerk stole them – and I’m pretty sure it was the first comic I added to my pull list. It’s incredible, you guys. [volume 1] I [volume 2] I [volume 3]

Batman: Arkham Asylum – This is one of those books that as you read it, you feel as if you’re going crazy with the characters. I’m still (six months later) not really sure what I even read, but I love it. It’s also illustrated by the absolutely amazing Dave McKean who creates dark, bizarre, incredible illustrations. My super newbie review is on WPR.

Batman and Robin – Okay, I’m going to attempt to tone down the obsession here because I could go do a whole post about how much I love Damian Wayne, you guys. In case you weren’t aware, that’s Bruce Wayne’s son, and he’s the focus of this Batman and Robin series I’m talking about. He’s such a sassy, stubborn, smug little punk, but he also just wants to live up to his dad and he loves his dog and…ugh. I love him. And not in a weird way. Just in a “I completely love this character and Patrick Gleason draws him SO perfectly” kind of way. He’s such a fun character to read each month.

Bodies – This mini-run from Si Spencer and Vertigo just ended and I’m still a little sad because of that, BUT this series is a whirlwind of craziness, timelines, open-mindedness, and I would highly recommend it. Seriously, the trade comes out soon and you need it. You can read all of my reviews for all eight issues (as well as my interview with Si) on WatchPlayRead.

Chew – So I’ve only read the first ten issues of this one (waiting on my hold to come in!), but it’s so freaking weird but totally awesome, you guys. It’s about a guy who can tell where ANYTHING came from and what happened to it right before it died – so when he eats chicken he can how it died. Doesn’t that sound sucky? Yeah. BUT then he gets recruited to work in this special police department where he takes “samples” of PEOPLE to find out how they died. EW. But it’s so funny and odd too.

Wild’s End – Marketed as a mix of War of the World and A. A. Milne. If that doesn’t sound like something you want to read, just move on to the next one. If you stuck around, WHAT?! Doesn’t that sound amazing?? It was. It was only a six issue mini run but it was full of so much Britishness and I just love it.

Through the Woods – I reviewed this one on the blog. It’s creepy and dark and so so good.

Thor – The new Thor is a freaking woman, ladies and gentlemen (mostly ladies)! If that doesn’t sound appealing to you, boo on you. It’s a really cool story so far and I’m enjoying seeing new Thor and male-Thor who’s no longer worthy of Mjolnir duke it out.

Superior Iron Man – Tony Stark’s mind has been messed with and his already present arrogance and intelligence have been amplified. He believes he needs to make the world a smarter and more beautiful place – by hooking SanFran’s residents on a drug that makes them smarter and prettier. Fun times.

Top Ten Tuesday: ALL TIME FAVORITES from the past 3 years

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish. Today’s theme was:

Top Ten Books You Would Classify As ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOKS from the past 3 years (you can extend it to 5 if you need to).

Could they have come up with a HARDER topic? I don’t even know where to start. In the past three years, I’ve read somewhere around 400 or more books (I didn’t start recording until last year, but I read 157 books last year so multiplying that by almost 3). How do you possibly narrow that down to the ten you loved the most? I feel a little like this:

But I’m going to try. Here we go.

        

The Humans by Matt Haig. This book is beautiful and honest and real and it makes you appreciate what it means to be human and to be alive.

S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst. is like a love letter to books. It’s a work of art, a masterpiece, and I devoured it. S. is the epitome of why I want to work with books.

Saints of the Shadow Bible by Ian Rankin. Favorite author. Favorite character by favorite author. Favorite character by favorite author meets another character from a different series by favorite author and the results are spectacular.

The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater. My favorite book of the series so far. As I said in my review, “I cannot fathom reading a series more powerful, magical, spellbinding, or beautiful as the Raven Cycle books.”

My Heart & Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga. You might’ve noticed in my review that I related to this book in so many unexpected, wonderful and horrible ways and I loved that.

        

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. You might have read about how much I loved this book. It’s ridiculously creative and fun, and it’s illustrated by the incredible Oliver Jeffers. I just found out there’s going to be a sequel this year and I am so pumped!

It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini. Like MH&OBH, this was a tough one for me to read, but it’s so so good. My review

The Passage by Justin Cronin. This book turns the creepy factor up to eleven, and I raced through its 963 pages in just a couple of days. Vampires who are unlike any vampires you’ve ever seen.

Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins. I had to put a contemporary on here. Before last year, I hardly read ANY contemporaries (except the occasional Sarah Dessen), but after reading Morgan Matson’s Since You’ve Been Gone and Perkins’ Anna books, I’m seeking contemporaries out and reading so many more. Lola is my spirit animal and Cricket is my number one book boyfriend. My review

The Walking Dead, volume 1 by Robert Kirkman. My second foray into comics (after Saga, volume 1). TWD is what hooked me and got me obsessed with comics. I read all the (then) 20 volumes of TWD that were already out in about 2 weeks. TWD gets all the credit for pulling me into comics. My review

I could seriously go on for at least 20 more books/comics, but I’ll stop here. What books that you’ve read in the past three years are now ALL TIME FAVORITES?

Top Ten Tuesday: Freebie – Ten reasons to read comics

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme was a freebie, so I decided to do a post on ten of the comics you should try if you’re thinking about starting comics.

1. Pretty pictures – alright, that’s a HUGE oversimplification, but comics are beautifully illustrated by people like Fiona Staples (Saga), Jock (Judge Dredd, Green Arrow: Year One, and most recently Wytches), Jaime McKelvie (The Wicked + The Divine), Dave McKean (Arkham Asylum), Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead), and SO MANY MORE.

2. Creative stories – whether you’re a fan of superheroes, horror, anthropomorphic animals, zombies, or blasphemous preachers, I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll find a story to love.

3. Comics teach you that you can be a superhero too, like Batman – that is if you happen to be a billionaire with access to grade-a technology and a kick ass butler

4. Free Comic Book Day – Once a year you can go to your local comic book shop and get FREE comics. I’ll say that again: FREEEEE comics.

5. Wednesdays are no longer just the middle of the week – New comics come out every Wednesday. I never make it out to my comic shop on Wednesday, but I love perusing ComicList to see what new comics will be in my pull.

6. The Walking Dead – For me, this is a big reason. I started reading TWD comics in June, powered through all of the (then) 21 volumes of issues and added them to my pull list. I’ve now read all of the issues and am completely caught up on the TV show, which I didn’t start watching until after I’d read all of the comics that were out at the time. The best part about this is that the show and comics are so different – character arcs, plot lines, deaths, and the characters themselves are not always the same, so it’s like you get two completely different and unique stories! It’s awesome. It is sometimes difficult to match up the characters in the comics or show at first, but then you just become obsessed. A comic I’d recommend to those who aren’t sure if they want to try comics. Do you. You really do.

7. The book is always better than the movie – ‘Nuff said.

8. You’ll know what you’re talking about – When the next superhero movie comes out, you’ll be able to talk about the characters backstories like you’re old friends. You’ll know who the new character is in the Marvel post-credit scenes, so you won’t have to pretend you know who it is when everyone freaks out. Knowledge is power, you guys. 🙂

9. Improve your imagination – Although comics have the settings and characters drawn out for you, the minimal dialogue and little-to-no wordy descriptions, leave a lot of the world-building and character development to your imagination. You have to read between the lines (or, in this case, panels), which is a lot of fun.

10. It’s even more reading – if you like to read, comics are beautifully illustrated stories. They are books, whether you think so are not. The only difference is they are usually only 24 pages long. Unless, of course, you buy a trade paperback.

SUNDAY FUNDAY – Comics, Cities of Literature, and Strange Things

The lovely Cristina over at Girl in the Pages started Sunday Funday as a way to recap the bookish (and not-so-bookish) things that have happened that week.

December 1 – 7, 2014

Last weekend I was pretty busy, so I wasn’t able to post on Sunday. After Thanksgiving, I met my friend at her home in Alabama and we drove up to Chattanooga, TN, where we saw The 1975 live. Then we went to the Tennessee Aquarium, drove down to Birmingham, and saw Augustana live. It was a lot of fun!

This week, FOUR new UNESCO Cities of Literature were announced. I did my Master’s dissertation on the Cities of Literature, so this was really cool for me. New cities: Dunedin, Granada, Heidelberg, and Prague.

Books read: I’ve been making my way through The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber. It’s taking me a while but I’m enjoying it. It’s my first adult book in a while, which has taken some time to adjust to. It’s not necessarily action packed or anything, but it’s really interesting and full of soul. Expect a review in the next couple weeks.

TBR: I had a great comic book haul yesterday, and I also bought two of The Walking Dead Governor novels at Books-A-Million for $4 each! Check out my comic book haul below. I also received the package from Paige at The Paige-Turner – I won her giveaway! The second picture is the awesome books and swag I got from her!

Non-bookish things I’m excited about:

Well, it’s by a bookish person. So does that make it bookish? I don’t know. Anyway, Maggie Stiefvater just opened a Society6 shop where she’s selling prints of some of her artwork. Yeah, you know I’m excited. I need some. I really want this one. There are several I really love, like The Raven Cycle Character Sketches. They’re not too expensive, so maybe I’ll buy one if I get any Christmas money. 🙂 Isn’t it beautiful? Sharing the link so others can check out her awesome artwork.

So I had a pretty good week and my weekend has been full of making stuff for my Belle’s Enchanted Gift Exchange partner and my Bookish Christmas partner. I’ve read some, watched some Arrow, got paint all over my hands, and drank a lot of coffee. How’s your week been?

Stacking the Shelves: Comics galore!

This week I didn’t buy any new books (cue sad face) but I did get a stack of awesome comics today! None of which I’ve read yet (more sad face). Want to see what I got?

I got: Thomas Alsop #6, Memetic #1 (this is about a killer meme. A meme that kills. Can’t wait to read), Saga #24, The Walking Dead #134, Wild’s End #3, Wytches #2, Annihilator #1 (new from Grant Morrison. Yes!), Superior Iron Man #1, and Gotham Academy #2.

I’m excited about all of these. I’m obsessed with TWD. I’m pretty much in love with how British Wild’s End is. Also, the first issue of Wytches was crazy cool so I’m looking forward to #2. I’m really excited to try my first Iron Man series. Plus, his suit is purple. Wuuut? Awesome.

• What are you currently reading?

I just started Marie Lu’s The Young Elites last night. I’m only a few chapters in but I am already loving it. Her writing is amazing, and already the world-building is incredible. I hope to have time to read a good chunk of it at work today (oh the perks of working at a library!). I’m so glad it won my little what-to-read-next poll! 🙂

• What did you recently finish reading?

I recently finished (and reviewed) Mary Amato’s Get Happy, which I was quite impressed with – check out my review for more on that. I also read (and reviewed on WatchPlayRead) the first issue of the new Edward Scissorhands comic, which I also quite liked. I read the latest issue of The Walking Dead (always good), Batman and Robin (freaking awesome), and a few others. I’ve had a good few days of reading.

• What do you think you’ll read next?

I think I’ll probably read Scott Westerfeld’s Afterworlds. It was the other book in my what-to-read-next poll and it lost, but after I finish The Young Elites, I’ll probably check that one out. I’m looking forward to that one as well. I’ve heard some mixed things about it, but I haven’t ever really had a problem with Scott Westerfeld, so I’m sure I’ll like it.

October 20 – 26, 2014

Yesterday, I started The Walking Dead TV show. I’ve watched three episodes so far. It’s interesting to see it come to life because I’m used to words with pictures in my head, but this already had pictures. I think I’m going to do a reaction post for each season as I finish. What do you guys think about that?

I don’t have much planned for this week except for the usual: Top Ten Tuesday, Waiting on Wednesday, and maybe a Teaser Tuesday, so this week will be a fly by the seat of my pants kind of week. 🙂

Books read:

This week, I finished and reviewed The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Today, I started Get Happy by Mary Amato. I also read several issues of comics: TWD, Batman and Robin, Edward Scissorhands (which will be reviewed on WatchPlayRead this week), Batman Eternal, and more. I got to read Once Upon an Alphabet by Oliver Jeffers at work; it was amazing, of course. I’ll probably review that soon! I also finished rereading Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater as an audiobook. It was pretty great. I think I’m going to do a review of that soon as well.

TBR:

Yesterday was Halloween ComicFest. I had a pretty awesome haul from that.

I also bought the latest issues of TWD, Batman and Robin, Bodies, Wild’s End, and Trees and the first issue of Arkham Manor, which I’m looking forward to checking out.

From the library, I checked out Marie Lu’s The Young Elites and Meg Wolitzer’s Belzhar. I’m so excited to read this, especially The Young Elites. I’ve heard such amazing things! Oh yeah, I also checked out Every Day by David Levithan, which I’m reading for the Magnolia Book Award here in Mississippi. I’ve been wanting to read that one for a long time, so yay!

Sunday…er. Monday Funday! Week in Review

[Monday] Funday: Week in Review

Ooops. It’s Monday. Not Sunday. Oh well. I’ve been sick for the past few days, so I haven’t felt like doing ANYTHING. You might have noticed I haven’t posted anything on the blog since Wednesday. I know that isn’t that long, but I feel like my blog is a little lonely and sad. So I’m going to do my regular Sunday Funday post today instead! (I also forgot to do one last weekend, so I’ll have a few things from that in here)

September 22 – October 6, 2014

In the past two weeks, I’ve mostly been working, BUT I went to see Joshua James for the THIRD time. That was awesome. He’s incredible live, so I had a blast (it didn’t hurt that he remembered me and gave me a huge hug afterward). 🙂

I also went to a wedding, to see TMR for the second time, bought some new comics, and put up some pretty displays in the library where I work.

What have I read in the past two weeks?

I finished and reviewed Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin

I read Volumes 15-20 of The Walking Dead comics (which means I’ve read all the volumes we currently have in our library system. Good thing I bought Volume 21 yesterday!!)

I also read The Intern by Gabrielle Tozer (which I’ll be reviewing on WatchPlayRead this week)

I listened to the audiobook of Panic by Lauren Oliver (read by Sarah Drew) – which I’ll be reviewing on the blog this week

I read an assortment of children’s books at work, but one of the ones I really enjoyed was Kiki’s Blankie by Janie Bynum. I read this one for my library’s preschool story time and the kids (and I) thought it was adorable. It even inspired me to draw Kiki. 🙂

Books/comics I’ve added to my shelves:

I don’t believe I have bought any new books in the past two weeks (WHAT? I know, right?) but I checked out The One and Only Ivan from the library; it looks like a fun and easy read.

I bought several new comics yesterday though – like I mentioned earlier, I bought Volume 21 of The Walking Dead because we didn’t have it in our library system. I also bought Issues #129, 130, and 132. I need Issues #127, 128, and 131 so I can be completely caught up to the last issue. I’ll probably order those three online (unless one of you lovely people has it and would like to send it to me!! – I’ll pay!). I also got Issue #23 of Saga. I bought Issue #1 of Low (from Image) and Thor (who’s a girl now! From Marvel). I’m excited to start those and see if I like them. I haven’t read a whole lot from Marvel since starting comics, so hopefully I’ll be able to dive in with Thor.

Also, I thought I’d update everyone on my Goodreads reading challenge: I set my challenge in March to read 100 books this year. I didn’t really start updating Goodreads until then (when I started my blog), and I’ve currently read 118/100 books. Haha. Yay!! That doesn’t even count my single issue comics I’ve read (which has to be about 100 at least). I think I’ll set my goal higher next year!

Comic Book Review: The Walking Dead, Volume 3 “Safety Behind Bars”

So far this week, I’ve reviewed the first two volumes of The Walking Dead comics, Days Gone Bye and Miles Behind Us. Today, I’m reviewing the third volume, Safety Behind Bars, which just made me even more obsessed with the comics. I wish I could just buy ALL the volumes and spend several days reading them all, but, alas, there are like 20 volumes and I cannot afford that.

There may be spoilers if you’ve never watched the show, because I don’t know when what happens in the books happens in the show so I can’t warn you. I’ll just say: there are potential spoilers in this review.

Goodreads Summary:

This volume follows our band of survivors as they set up a permanent camp inside a prison. Relationships change, characters die, and our team of survivors learn there’s something far more deadly than zombies out there: each other.

What I thought:

The group make it into the prison, but outside the snow melts and a handwritten note says “All dead. Do not enter.” Uh oh. In the prison, the group finds four criminals who’ve holed themselves up in the kitchen. Rick decides to go back to the farm and invite Hershel and his children (and Glenn) to stay at the prison; they’ve got plenty of room. What a nice move on Rick’s part; he’s a good dude.

Julie and Chris enter into a suicide pact that goes wrong. Chris shoots just a second too soon and Julie dies but Chris lives. When Tyreese gets to the two of them, he finds his daughter dead, but soon she returns to life as a zombie. This was a previously unknown way to turn and the group realize that they are all infected and should they die, they’d be a zombie. Oh crap.

This prompts Rick to go back to where they buried Shane and kill him again. That’s what you get, Shane!

Back at the prison, Hershel finds his twin daughters, Susie and Rachel, murdered in the barber shop. The group locks up Dexter, the inmate who was convicted for murder. Andrew, convicted for drug dealing, talks to Dexter (it is implied they had a relationship) about getting the guns from the armory and kicking them all out. Andrea is in the laundry room and is attacked by Thomas (convicted for “tax evasion”) and is beaten down by Rick, who introduces the “You Kill You Die” rule. Thomas is eventually shot by Maggie and thrown over the fence. Hershel watches as he is eaten by zombie.

At the end of the volume, Dexter and Andrew threaten Rick and his gang and tell them to “Get the fuck out of my house.”

Well, dang. Just as they think they’ve got a nice place for themselves, they’re kicked out. Apparently, this is not what happens in the show. Again, I don’t know what happens, but I thought this volume was super intense and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The artwork continued to be top notch and super impressive. I can’t wait to see what happens in volume 4!
