FRAGILE REIGN (Mortal Enchantment #2)

Fragile Reign_coverIt’s been a week since all hell broke loose…

Rumors of King Taron’s weakened powers have left the air court vulnerable. Kalin is desperate to awaken her akasha powers, except she doesn’t know how. Tension within the court is at an all-time high. Pressure is mounting for her to ascend to the throne, but a halfling has never ruled over any court. To solidify her position, the council has advised her to marry Sebastian—a high ranking air elemental she’s never met and her betrothed.

Will Kalin sacrifice her relationship with Rowan to strengthen her court?

Rowan and Marcus return to a fire court in turmoil. Liana’s death has fueled the fire elementals’ distrust against the air and woodland courts. The unbalanced elements have set off natural disasters all over the mortal world. Rowan takes the throne to restore balance, promising to unite the fire court. But not all elementals are happy with his leadership. Many are secretly loyal to Valac, which means Rowan needs to find allies for his cause.

Can Rowan unify the court of fire before the elements destroy the world?

EXCERPTS

I chose two excerpts for the post, one from Rowan’s point of view and one from Kalin’s. Enjoy!

ROWAN

I need to clear my head.

Away from my court.

Away from everyone.

I took a portal to the beach—the last place I had spent time with Kalin. Nothing about the last several hours made any kind of sense to me. I walked aimlessly down the sandy beach as I tried to unravel the confusion in my head. Dark skies made it difficult to see much of anything in front of me. The only illumination came from the full moon. In this dimmed light, I could make out the outline of the veil protecting Avalon. It sparkled like the stars in the sky.

My thoughts quickly shifted back to the engagement party. Kalin just stood there at his side and didn’t say a word. She didn’t even bother to answer my question. Did she feel nothing when she saw me? Did she even care how I felt? This wasn’t the Kalin I had come to know. The brave girl I had trained. The girl who saved her father against all odds. The girl who fought viciously for her court. It was a nightmare. Unfortunately, my nightmare was also my reality.

KALIN

Being betrothed totally sucked. Having powers I couldn’t control sucked. Not being able to help my ailing father sucked. Pretty much everything about my life right now sucked on an epic level of suckage. I forced a smile as I stood beneath the stone archway next to the council members, pretending to be excited to meet Sebastian. The same way I pretended not to notice my decisions were being made for me. Like everything in my life wasn’t out of control and falling to pieces right in front of me.

The mountain wind caught hold of the bottom trim of my yellow full-length gown. I pushed it back down with my gloved hands. The council insisted that our first meeting was to be a formal affair, so I had to dress like I was going to a prom. Ariel, of course, tried to make the best of it. She thought a princess makeover might improve my mood. Unfortunately, all of her efforts— combined with the way-too-tight bodice on this gown—just added to my overall disdain.

After speaking with Dad, we decided it was best for him to keep Mom away from all of this. At the moment, I had to go along with the engagement. I was hoping I could gain my akasha powers and never have to tell her about this whole disaster. Although I understood Dad’s motives, I was still pissed that he never told me about the betrothal. There should have been a discussion between us. Lots and lots of them until he saw my side and then changed his mind. An overwhelming sense of despair lingered in the pit of my stomach. If I couldn’t ignite my akasha powers, would I really have to follow through with this and marry a stranger?

BLOG TOUR: Mortal Enchantment – Review Only Blog Tour

Mortal Enchantment Banner

I read and reviewed the prequel to this novel, The Shadow Prince, HERE if you’d like to read it first!

“Mortal Enchantment spins a unique twist on elemental mythology. This series is not to be missed.” – Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

MortalEnchantment_coverIn Kalin Matthew’s world, elementals control the forces of nature. They are divided into four courts: air, woodland, fire, and water. At sixteen she will leave the life she’s built with her mortal mother. Kalin will move to Avalon to rule with her father—the elemental king of the air court. Along the way, she’s attacked by a fire court assassin and saved by Rowan, a swoon-worthy elemental with a questionable past.

Worst of all, she learns her father is missing.

To rescue him, Kalin will have to work with a judgmental council and a system of courts too busy accusing each other of deceit to actually be able to help her. But, they aren’t her biggest challenge. With the Midwinter’s Ball only five days away, Kalin must take over her father’s duties, which includes shifting control of the elements—power Kalin has yet to realize.

As Rowan attempts to train her, a war looms between the four courts. If Kalin fails, her father will die and the courts will fall, but the betrayal she’s about to uncover may cost her even more…

What I thought:

You might remember from my review of the prequel novella to this series, The Shadow Prince, that I really enjoyed it and was looking forward to reading Mortal Enchantment. I waited a few weeks in between reading them (as I had e-ARCs and such), but I kept looking at Mortal Enchantment on my shelf with excitement. When I finally was able to pick it up, I wasn’t disappointed.

Mortal Enchantment is a fun, fast-paced unique take on elemental mythology. I really enjoyed the setting – Avalon, the world in which all the elementals live divided into four courts that control the elements. These courts – air, water, fire, and woodland – were all fascinating. I’m glad we got to learn more about them in the novel, because the prequel novella definitely got me interested. I thought getting behind the scenes and seeing how Kalin learned to control her powers was really cool. I could almost feel my own fingers burning with the power she was producing.

One thing I wished was different was the length. I wished it were longer! Some of the scenes, especially a particularly important battle scene that had a lot of buildup, were somewhat short and over way too quickly. I could have done with more descriptions here! But instead of focusing on these big moments, the book focuses on the smaller, more intimate moments between Kalin and Rowan or Kalin and her handmaid Ariel. This was enjoyable and allows the reader to get to know these characters better. This isn’t really a complaint: I just wish I had more of the book. All the more reason to read Fragile Reign, the next book in the series!

Two things about Rowan to wrap up this review: 1. I wanted more of him, and 2. He’s got a little bit of an ego, doesn’t he? He knows he’s super sexy and he uses it to his advantage, which is not something I find particularly attractive. I mean, if you know you’re good looking, that’s one thing, but you don’t have to be arrogant about it. Taking this fact into account, it’s funny that I wish we’d had more of him here. I think I was used to reading The Shadow Prince, in which he’s the main character, so trading him off for a different point-of-view was different.

The bottom line: overall, a fun, fast-paced, interesting take on the fantasy genre. I’ll definitely be checking out Fragile Reign when it releases next month!

Rating: 7 – pretty good

SUNDAY FUNDAY: WEEK IN REVIEW [16] – Wisdom teeth, wands, and blue lilies

The lovely Cristina over at Girl in the Pages started Sunday Funday as a way to recap the bookish (and not-so-bookish) things that have happened that week.

October 13 – 19, 2014

So I got my wisdom teeth out on Friday. Fuuuun. Yeah, that was sarcasm. It wasn’t nearly as bad as everyone I’d spoken to made it out to be, but I’m still a little sore and that’s no fun. Luckily, I didn’t go crazy on the anesthesia or have a lot of swelling or anything!

Things you might’ve missed on the blog this week:

ARC Review of Maggie Stiefvater’s Blue Lily, Lily Blue

Members of Adi Alsaid’s (Let’s Get Lost) street team, of which I am a part, have started a weekly meme called Seize the Tuesday. Here’s my first post.

I really enjoyed this week’s Top Ten Tuesday – Places books have made me want to visit.

Coming up on the blog this week: My first blog tour! I’ll be participating in Stacey O’Neale’s Mortal Enchantment blog tour on Tuesday. Usually I have more of the week planned, but the whole wisdom teeth thing has put me behind schedule. I’ll have Top Ten Tuesday and Waiting on Wednesday as usual, and probably Seize the Tuesday and WWW Wednesday. I plan on having a couple of reviews too! 🙂

Books read:

I didn’t read that much this week, unfortunately. I read Bats at the Library at the library. 🙂 I also started The Night Circus, finally. I had to take a break from it this weekend, 1. Because of the wisdom teeth, and 2. Because I needed to reread Mortal Enchantment before the blog tour. I read some comics and I am now completely caught up with Saga and The Walking Dead! I also tried Gotham Academy, but I’m not really sure how I feel about that one. Has anyone tried that one?

TBR: I didn’t buy any new books/comics this week, but I added a few books to my TBR. In Mississippi, there’s this award called the Magnolia Award, which is awarded two children’s books in a few different categories. I will be reading the books nominated in the young adult category (9-12 age range) for my library, so I’ve recently added these books to my TBR (Eleanor and Park and Every Day were already on it):

45 Pounds (More or Less) by K.A. Barson; Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell; Every Day by David Levithan; Orleans by Sherri L. Smith; Since You Asked by Maurene Goo; I’ll also be reading Doll Bones by Holly Black, which is in the 6-8 age range. Have you guys read any of these? I plan on starting with Every Day.

Non-bookish things I’m excited about:

I got these awesome new shoes today!

20141019_161947

At the library where I work, I planned a wand making event. We had a huge turnout, and it was a lot of fun. These are the wands that my boss, my coworker, and I made. Mine’s the one in the middle. 🙂

Update me on your liiiiives! What have you read this week? Anything exciting happen?

WWW Wednesday [3]

WWW Wednesdays are hosted by Should Be Reading. To play along, just answer the following three questions: (As always, all titles are linked to their corresponding Goodreads pages)

  • What are you currently reading?

The Night CircusI’m currently reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It’s interesting so far. I’m enjoying myself. It is very, VERY visual, which is super cool. I love the color scheme of the cover, which continues to run throughout the book.

  • What did you recently finish reading?

Bodies Issue 3 coverI’m going to give you a comic for this question this week. I just read Bodies #3 (written by Si Spencer). This is a limited run being released from Vertigo. I’ve reviewed Issue #1 and Issue #2 over on WatchPlayRead and interacted with Si Spencer on Twitter a bit about the comic. It’s an interesting comic, and this issue revealed a few things that I just wasn’t expecting.

  • What do you think you’ll read next?

MortalEnchantment_coverAfter I finish The Night Circus, I’ll be reading Stacey O’Neale’s Mortal Enchantment. I’m taking part in the Mortal Enchantment Blog Tour (my post will be up on the 21st). I enjoyed the prequel, The Shadow Prince, so I’m looking forward to this one.

What about you? What are you reading? What did you just finish? And what’s next?

WWW Wednesday [2]

WWW Wednesdays are hosted by Should Be Reading. To play along, just answer the following three questions: (As always, all titles are linked to their corresponding Goodreads pages)

  • What are you currently reading?Blue Lily, Lily Blue

I haven’t started it yet, but I’ll be starting Blue Lily, Lily Blue today!! I’m so excited that I have an e-ARC of this. I know it comes out in just a couple of weeks, but I don’t want to wait. Maggie Stiefvater is a wordsmith and her books are incredible. I can’t wait to go back to Henrietta and the Raven Boys. Yeah, I’m going to hurry up with this post so I can start that!

  • What did you recently finish reading?

Oh Yeah, Audrey!I just finished reading Oh Yeah, Audrey! by Tucker Shaw. I read it in approximately 2.5 hours for a few reasons: it’s a ridiculously quick read; it’s not really that deep so it’s easy to fly through it; and more reasons, which I’ll cover in my review of it. Should be up this week.

  • What do you think you’ll read next?Mortal Enchantment

After Blue Lily, Lily Blue, I’m going to read Mortal Enchantment by Stacey O’Neale. I’m one of the blogs that’s participating in the Mortal Enchantment Blog Tour. I recently read and quite enjoyed the prequel to Mortal Enchantment titled The Shadow Prince, so I’m looking forward to reading this one.

Book Review: The Shadow Prince by Stacey O’Neale

Stacey O’Neale’s The Shadow Prince is a fun, well-paced, action packed intro into her Mortal Enchantment series.

The Shadow PrinceAuthor: Stacey O’Neale

Genre: Fantasy

Publisher:

Publication Date:

102 pages

Let’s start with a brief synopsis:

Rowan is a fire elemental and the son of the Fire Court’s Queen. Rowan has lived most of his life outside of Avalon – the home to all four elemental courts – learning to control his element. The Fire Court Queen, Prisma, has never shown her son any love, believing it to be a weakness, so when she announces that she’ll be abdicating her thrown to him, you could say he was a little surprised. But of course, she will not give up her thrown without wanting something from Rowan in return. Prisma wants Rowan to kill the half-human, half-elemental daughter of the Air Court King.

What I thought:

The Shadow Prince is the introduction to Stacey O’Neale’s Mortal Enchantment series. It packs an unbelievable amount of action, world building, and character development in its short 102 pages. It was a great beginning to this series that had me ready to start the next book right away.

Rowan has lived most of his life in the mortal world, so the way that he talks is a lot like teenagers these days. I appreciated this, but it was also quite jarring to read a fantasy book in which the main character tells himself to man up or calls his friend a dick. It was weird at times. The relationship between Rowan and his best friend Marcus, a Gabriel hound (basically a shape shifter that Prisma has forced to serve her), was a lot of fun. I enjoyed their banter, but at times it was hard to remember they were boys.

Another thing I didn’t like was the repetitiveness of some of the content. Rowan thinks about the fact that his mother would never give him the crown unless it would benefit her about a hundred times. Also, the word “regardless” is used about a million times.

It sounds like I didn’t like this book, doesn’t it? That’s completely not true. There were a few things that irked me, but I really enjoyed this one overall. It is completely entertaining, well-paced, fun, and interesting. As I said at the beginning, O’Neale is able to pack an astonishing amount of story into this short novella. I’m looking forward to reading Mortal Enchantment and getting to know Rowan even more.

The bottom line: The Shadow Prince could have used a little more editing, but overall it is an entertaining, well-paced, and super fun intro into the Mortal Enchantment series.

Rating: 7 – pretty good
