Ten Books I’d Love to Read With My Book Club/If I Had A Book Club (or you could pick a specific kind of book club — like if you had a YA book club or an adult book club or a science fiction book club etc.)
I don’t have a book club (unless you count my blog) but I’ve often thought about joining/starting one. I read a lot of YA, and while I would enjoy discussing the YA books I read in a group, I kind of use my blog and other blogs for that. So I’d like to be in a book club that read adult fiction – to keep me reading more adult fiction and to be able to discuss it with other adults. So if I had a book club that read adult fiction, I’d love to read these books with them. [GR behind each explanation is linked to Goodreads]
BOOKS I’VE READ AND WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS
The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber – we all know how much I LOVED this one. I’d love to talk about it with a book club! GR
The Humans by Matt Haig – who’s surprised by this choice? I’ll answer for you – no one. I want everyone to read this book. GR
Rivers by Michael Farris Smith – another book I loved. Would be interesting to discuss Rivers with a book club especially since I live in Mississippi and know people who were really affected by Katrina. GR
The Labrador Pact/The Last Family in England by Matt Haig – a book written from the perspective of the family dog? Yep. Matt Haig has a beautiful way of making you realize things about yourself and humanity that you never would have thought of in his books. GR
BOOKS I HAVEN’T READ AND WOULD PICK TO READ
If On a Winter’s Night a Traveller by Italo Cavino – Have been told by several people I need to read this one, and I would love to! GR
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – I know, I know. I’m not sure why I haven’t read this yet either. Probably because I tend to stay away from hype. I don’t know what the major twist is, but the fact that I know there’s a major twist kind of irritates me. I’ll be looking for it the whole time I’m reading. BUT I do want to read this one eventually. GR
Landline by Rainbow Rowell – I really liked Rowell’s other adult book, Attachments, so I want to check this one out too. Would be fun to read with a group. GR
The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey – I don’t know if this is really book club material, but I’m going to assume if I joined a book club, it’d be full of really cool people who’d want to read this. GR
Us by David Nichols – I enjoyed One Day, and I think this would be a good book to read in February. GR
The Good Luck of Right Now by Matthew Quick – I’ve heard that this one is weird and wonderful. I like both of those things. Plus, I liked The Silver Linings Playbook, and I want to read more by Quick. GR

I read Gone Girl before I got into blogging and when I read it I was just dying for people to discuss it with! It would be a great book club book!
Oooo. That makes it sound really good. I will pick Gone Girl up eventually.
Unlike other novels that live and die by their “big twist”, the biggest compliment I can give Gone Girl (in my non-hyping opinion LOL) is that even if you do expect it to happen (or not) the overall packaging of elements seems to do a solid job in carrying the story to its end. But in terms of discussion content, yeah I can see there being plenty to talk about!

Going to add to the hype for If on a Winter’s Night, a Traveller. It’s definitely a weird one, but it’s incredibly interesting and it’s fun spotting all the genre parallels and so on.
Noooo. Don’t give me more reason to break my book buying ban to get that!! Lol. I really do want to read that one. I’ll read it this year for sure.

I’ve never read Matt Haig but it sounds like he’s got an interesting way of going about a story. I would love to read Landlines! It’d be great for a book club I think. Great list!
Matt Haig does have an interesting way of telling a story. The Humans is written through the eyes of an alien (not super sci-fi if that turns you off) in order to see humans and humanity from a new perspective. The Labrador Pact is through the eyes of a dog to see the dynamics of a family. It’s really cool, and I would highly recommend him.
The Girl With All The Gifts and Us are definitely two I’d like to get to. In fact, I’d just like to read more Nicholls as the only one by him I’ve read (and loved) was One Day. As for Gone Girl, while it’s now probably impossible to ignore the fact this book is twisty and twisted, I have to say as it’s a thriller it’s going to contain lots of twists, but you definitely don’t need to go looking for any of them. If you can, I’d say clear your head and dive into it. It’s worth it. R x
Should Us be a group read for us? Do you think Brandie would like that one? It seems like a good one for February or spring. 🙂 Yep, obviously going to have to read Gone Girl soon. Everyone seems to love it.

Great list. My real-life book club has read Gone Girl and a David Nicholls book, but not the one you selected. I’m reading Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock via Audible, and it’s quite good so far. One teeny thing — it’s Matthew Quick, not Michael Quick.

I would definitely join this book club! Maybe we could have some sort of transatlantic virtual club going, haha. I almost, ALMOST bought Us yesterday but stopped myself somehow, probably because it’s a big hardback and there’s no room for it on my shelf! I do want to read it though as I’ve read all of David Nichols’ other books. One Day was the best by far but the others were pretty good.
We should do that, Jo! I’m sort of doing that with two other bloggers (one in Ireland and one in Ohio) so it’d be fun to do one with you, especially since we probably won’t agree. Lol.
Gone Girl would be perfect! (I’m really impressed that you’ve been able to keep yourself from being spoiled with the twist!) Then the book club could get together and watch the movie after reading the book!
I think I may know the twist, but I’m not digging in further to find out. I want to be somewhat surprised by it even if I know a twist is coming. That is definitely a good idea! Too bad I don’t actually have a book club. Lol.

Gone Girl is on my list as well, although i had the same problem with knowing that there WAS a major twist, although I didn’t know what it was exactly. I haven’t started the Book of New Things yet but judging from what others have said about it, it seems like perfect (imaginary) book club material. This TTT has really made me think about getting off my bum and joining a book club. Although I’m not sure I need any more additions to my TBR list! 🙂
The Book of Strange New Things is SO good. I don’t know if there really are many book clubs around me, which is probably a good thing – too many books I want to read anyway!

I totally agree about needing a book club to ground me in adult literature. I think Gone Girl and Landline would both be great book club books.
I’m trying to read more adult and nonfiction books this year. I’ve done pretty well so far, so hopefully I can keep it up!
I’ve never been in a book club either, but based on tv they don’t actually discuss the book much. Good idea making it adult books. I’m curious about The Girl with All the Gifts too and I’ve heard good things. I’m just not sure if it’s for me. I’m not sure about Gone Girl either, I figure I’ll try the movie first. 😉
I actually really didn’t like If On A Winter’s Night A Traveller, it started well but the ending completely lost me. I want to read some of these so much!
