Waiting on Wednesday: Rooms by Lauren Oliver

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine in which we share a book that we are eagerly anticipating!Rooms

Publisher: Ecco

Author: Lauren Oliver

Release date: September 23, 2014

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Wealthy Richard Walker has just died, leaving behind his country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His estranged family—bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna—have arrived for their inheritance.

But the Walkers are not alone. Prim Alice and the cynical Sandra, long dead former residents bound to the house, linger within its claustrophobic walls. Jostling for space, memory, and supremacy, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself—in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a light bulb.

The living and dead are each haunted by painful truths that will soon surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide—with cataclysmic results.

Elegantly constructed and brilliantly paced, Rooms is an enticing and imaginative ghost story and a searing family drama that is as haunting as it is resonant.

Why I’m excited:

Okay, so I haven’t read any of Lauren Oliver’s other books, but I’ve heard a lot of good things. When I got on Edelweiss recently (which I access through WatchPlayRead’s account), I saw this and immediately requested it. I was attracted at first by the cover (which is awesome, in my opinion), but then I read the description and I love a good ghost story. The Goodreads page says it’s “a tale of family, ghosts, secrets, and mystery, in which the lives of the living and the dead intersect in shocking, surprising, and moving ways.” Sounds good to me. 🙂 I’ve been hearing good things about this one, and I’m looking forward to diving into the ARC soon.

  1. It sounds so good! I loved the Delirium trilogy and am desperately waiting to get my hands on Panic when the paperback is released in the UK. This seems like a break from the mould for her in terms of theme but her writing style is truly lovely so I’m sure it will be wonderful. I’d be excited to see, will be keeping my eye out for the UK release date!
